Bat Mitzvah Bliss!

We moms adore our sons, but there's something extra fun about planning a bat mitzvah party for a daughter, isn't there? Maybe it's that we can indulge all our girl fantasies. Or revisit our own dreams of what we wanted our bat mitzvah or Sweet 16 parties to be like.

All I know is that when I was planning my daughter's bat mitzvah even though it was my third time doing it (after two bar mitzvah boys), it felt unique and special. Maybe because I have only one girl.

Girls = Lots of Fun + Lots More Work
But it was also SO much harder to plan. My boys - like most at age 13 - were not very involved or fussy about their bar mitzvah celebrations. I was told very specifically not to embarrass them with any feminine decorations or activities. But beyond that, I was allowed to do pretty much whatever I wanted.

With my daughter, I didn't get off so easy. She worried that there were landmines of potential embarrassment everywhere. Every tiny decision about what was on the table, what activities would happen at the party and what the giveaways would be had to be approved by a panel of her girlfriends to make sure none of the ideas were embarrassing or uncool.

I believe there are global treaties that required less negotiation.

How to Know What Your Daughter Will Like
Luckily, my daughter and I have similar taste, so we didn't butt heads too often. For those of you trying to figure out what your kids will like, there's a chapter in the MitzvahChic book called "The Kids Have the Last Word" that summarizes what most kids like and dislike in their parties. And for confirmation, a MitzvahChic mom did her own survey and you can see it here on the site - bar mitzvah survey.
