Decorated Floating Candles
To make these gorgeous floating candles simply draw curlicues on candles with dimensional gold paint. When paint is dry, coat the top (avoid the wick area) with Mod Podge decoupage medium and sprinkle with chunky clear glitter. For more quick, easy and drop-dead ideas, see MitzvahChic book.

This is the idea that launched MitzvahChic; it's the table author Gail Greenberg designed for her own son, Griffin, in 2000. A foamcore castle allows you to tell your child's entire story through photos in the windows and to add other symbols to the walls. It's lit up by a bowl of floating candles that's topped with flowers. Making the castles is time-consuming but any patient art student can easily do it for you.
Gail's other tip - Anytime you're using a lot of candles on a table and keeping the room dark, consider using a reflective tablecloth. I used shiny copper cloths and the effect of all that reflected candlelight was dazzling. The light was so flattering, the guests just glowed, literally and figuratively, because they knew they looked gorgeous. That might not have been the case with silver because it would be a harsher light, but experiment to see what works for you!
