Shining Castle
A very inexpensive project that requires just foamcore, an X-Acto knife,
color photocopies and time. Shown in MitzvahChic as part of a bar mitzvah / bat
mitzvah theme party, but also perfect for a fairy tale wedding or anniversary!

Directions
- Cut foamcore in half lengthwise into two 10”X30” pieces. To cut foamcore, use a very sharp
X-Acto knife and a straight edge. You will need to use very little pressure and score a minimum
of 2-3 times. If you use too much pressure, you’ll crush the foam and get a very raggedy cutline.
- Lay the two castle patterns (use download link below to get art) on top of foamcore with
graphite paper in between (shiny side against foamcore). Use a few pieces of masking tape to
hold pattern in place Transfer all lines and mark the dividing lines between panels.
- Cut out all windows and doors. Where panels meet, cut once with a straight edge, being
careful not to cut all the way through! We want them to angle here, not separate.
- If you want to add dimension, cut out the extra foamcore pieces and cardboard details.
To make ornaments, roll out Sculpey with rolling pin about ¼”-½” thick and make an impression
in it with any object or raised design (our angel came from a lamp; you can get pillars from
cake-decorating shop). Bake Sculpey until it’s hard. Roll out more Sculpey and press it into
your “mold”. Pull gently out of mold and lay on a flat surface; cut excess Sculpey away with
X-Acto knife and bake ornament till hard.
- To assemble, glue foamcore pieces, cardboard details and ornaments to basic 10”X30” castle
strips. Cut each photo or the plain tissue at least ½” bigger all around than opening it goes in
and glue to the castle back. You’ll need votive candles on table inside the castle to light the
whole thing up properly. Be sure to put them in glass holders to avoid risk of fire!
